A date with the history of the .cat domain: celebrating 20 years together
Twenty years is a long time. Time to grow, to consolidate, to prove that what once seemed impossible was, in fact, the beginning of a much bigger story.
This Friday, 12 June, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the .cat domain with an industry meeting. A space to look back, reflect on where we come from and what we have achieved, and to look ahead together.
A programme to commemorate 20 years of .cat
The event will take place at 11:00 at the COAC auditorium in Barcelona and will unfold across three key moments:
Following an institutional opening, we will return to the origins: those who saw beyond the possible and successfully convinced ICANN, the organisation that regulates Internet domains, to recognise a place of its own for our language and culture. A milestone that in 2005 changed the rules of the game for linguistic communities around the world.
We will then paint a portrait of .cat through 20 facts that show what we have built together: nearly 118,000 active domains, nine out of ten users renewing year after year, and a community that every day chooses .cat to represent who they are on the Internet.
To close, a round table will place .cat in the global Internet context: its relationship with ICANN, its role within the geoTLD Group, and the vision of both international and local registrars.
The event will close with Genís Roca, President of Accent Obert.
The voices that made the story possible
The founding figures of the .cat domain will be present, alongside ICANN representatives, members of the geoTLD Group, and professionals from the domain industry, including accredited registrars Blacknight and Team Blue. The Accent Obert team, the organisation that manages .cat, will also be represented by Beatriz Guzmán, Head of Domains, and Pep Masoliver, Chief Technology Officer.
