2025: A year of transformation and commitment to the .cat community
2025 has been an intense and decisive year for the .cat domain. A year marked by strategic decisions, new projects and actions that have strengthened the role of .cat as a digital infrastructure serving language, culture and community.
One of the main turning points of the year has been the transformation of Fundació .cat into Accent Obert. More than a name change, it has marked the beginning of a new stage that broadens and reinforces the project’s focus: the defence of digital rights, the promotion of talent and the commitment to ensuring that Catalan can thrive fully and naturally on the Internet.

Greater security and trust
Security has been one of the central pillars of 2025. Accent Obert has obtained the National Security Framework (ENS) certification at medium level, confirming that our systems meet the required standards in terms of information protection, data management and service continuity.
At the same time, we have strengthened the security of the .cat domain with a new tool to detect fraudulent uses, allowing us to act preventively and better protect Internet users.
Defending the rights of .cat registrants has remained a priority. In this regard, we have continued working on issues such as the LaLiga case and domain blocking, with the aim of safeguarding digital rights.
Research, innovation and a more inclusive Internet
2025 has also been a year of strong commitment to research and innovation. The .cat domain has been selected as a beneficiary of one of the ICANN Grants, enabling us to lead a pioneering project on the role of geo-top-level domains on the Internet.
The project, Assessing GeoTLD’s performance for enhanced Internet accessibility: An open source methodological approach, led by Accent Obert and funded by the ICANN Grant Program, involves collaboration with eleven GeoTLDs. Its goal is to develop an open, rigorous and replicable methodology to analyse how search engines —both traditional ones such as Google and those based on artificial intelligence— treat geo-top-level domains.

Universal Acceptance: all languages, all characters
In line with this vision, throughout the year we have intensified our work on Universal Acceptance. Defending an inclusive Internet also means ensuring that all languages —and all their characters— work properly online. On the Internet, Catalan must also be able to be written using all its letters.

We have also celebrated the European Day of Languages, joining forces with PuntuEus, puntoGal and PuntBarcelona to highlight linguistic and territorial diversity as a powerful communication tool on the Internet.
Education and creativity
Throughout 2025, we have continued to promote Dotació .cat, a project aimed at schools that enables students to create websites using real, professional tools, in collaboration with registrars Cdmon, Dinahosting and Nominalia.
We have also celebrated the return of the Wapps Contest, bringing digital creativity and technology into classrooms and opening participation to all websites created through Dotació .cat.

A collective project
This year we have continued to offer high-quality, more accessible services to non-profit organisations, as well as support for entrepreneurs who choose .cat as part of their digital projects.
At an international level, we have maintained an active presence within ICANN and CENTR, participating in key meetings such as the CENTR Jamboree in Lyon, the CENTR BOP in Tallinn, and ICANN meetings in Prague and Dublin, while continuing to work closely with registrars, key partners in growing and consolidating the .cat project worldwide.
