.cat attends the 2024 GeoTLD members meeting
The .cat Foundation has actively participated in the annual GeoTLD Group meeting, held in London on September 5th and 6th. This event, which brings together representatives of various cultural and geographic domains (geoTLDs) each year, has been a key platform for discussing the challenges and opportunities facing the sector in a constantly evolving digital context.
This year, London & Partners, an agency of the London City Council responsible for, among other things, the management of the .london domain, hosted the annual meeting of GeoTLD members with .london as the host. Also attending the meeting were representatives of the following domains: .bzh, .frl, .amsterdam, .wien, .cologne, .alsace, .berlin, .hamburg, .barcelona, .cat, .gal, eus, and .paris.
Together, we were able to reflect on the current situation of geographic domains by exploring the evolution of the geoTLD market in the face of broader economic trends and ongoing digitalization. To do this, we considered factors such as economic growth, changes in domain use, new consumer interests, the growth of internet users, and e-commerce, among others.
The meeting was an opportunity for GeoTLD group members to analyze the future prospects of the sector, share ongoing projects, explore new collaboration opportunities, and celebrate the fact that many of the participating domains are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year.
The European NIS2 directive was present in many of the conversations held during the meeting. This new regulation, which will enter into force next October, aims to identify domain holders and regulate the responsibilities of registrars and registries in order to make the European digital environment more secure.
Throughout the GeoTLD members meeting, we also had the great opportunity to meet with representatives of ICANN to discuss the details of the new round of domains that will take place in 2026 and which will represent a great opportunity to apply for new extensions representing communities, brands, and generic names.
Participation in these meetings allows the .cat Foundation to stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends, establish contacts with other similar organizations, and work together to build a more diverse, open, and inclusive Internet. The .cat thus reaffirms its commitment to the global geoTLD community and to the promotion of a cyberspace that reflects the world’s cultural and linguistic richness.
