What is the .cat community?

The .cat community is the set of people, organisations and projects that have chosen to carry out their digital activity in Catalan. It is the digital reflection of a language and a culture that lives, works and communicates on the Internet in Catalan.

Who belongs to it

All individuals, organisations and businesses that:

  • Have a .cat domain for their digital project.
  • Use any of the free tools we offer (ja.cat, jo.cat, va.cat, ssl.cat, among others) to live fully in Catalan on the Internet.
  • Take part in the programmes and initiatives we drive to promote digital Catalan, such as the .cat Grant for teachers or the Wapps Awards.

You can also be part of the .cat community.

Why is it better to have my own email rather than a Gmail or Hotmail?

When you use email services from a major tech corporation, such as Gmail for example, you hand over control of your communications to companies that operate under foreign legislation and that often monetise your data for advertising purposes.

Having an independent email gives you three fundamental advantages:

Real privacy: your communications are not analysed by commercial algorithms or shared with third parties without your consent. Your data is yours.

Digital sovereignty: you do not depend on unilateral decisions from an external company: changes in terms, service closures or arbitrary account blocks. You are in control.

Independence and continuity: if a major platform changes its policies or disappears, you lose access to years of communications. With your own account, your digital identity is not tied to any multinational.

Ultimately, choosing an independent email is an act of digital responsibility: you protect your privacy, strengthen your autonomy and contribute to a fairer and more decentralised digital ecosystem.

What free tools does the .cat offer?

The .cat domain offers everyone a set of free tools designed to facilitate digital life in Catalan. All of them are freely accessible and available at their respective links:

  • ja.cat: the official link shortener of the .cat domain. Allows you to create short and personalised links, generate QR codes and manage all your links from your own account. You can access it directly with your .cat domain.
  • jo.cat: digital identity service in Catalan that lets you create your personal profile on the Internet with a .cat domain.
  • va.cat: service for sending files of up to 2 GB. Allows you to send them to as many recipients as you want, with encryption and password protection, and choose whether the files will be public or private.
  • ssl.cat: tool to check whether a website has its security certificate active. You only need to enter the URL of the website you want to check and it indicates whether the certificate is valid and until when.
  • WHOIS .cat: public consultation tool to know whether a .cat domain is registered or available, and to consult the public data associated with a domain.
  • Domain generator: tool with artificial intelligence that helps you find original names for your .cat domain if you are uninspired or if the name you wanted is already registered.
