The .cat is the right domain for organisations rooted in the country
The Cine Club Manresa, founded in 1955, explains why the .cat was the only possible choice for an organisation so deeply rooted in its territory and Catalan culture.

The Cine Club Manresa has spent decades bringing quality cinema to its city. Since 2007, it has done so with a domain that reflects exactly who it is and where it comes from.
On 22 October 1955, a chronicle in the local Manresa newspaper recorded for the first time an activity organised under the name Cineclub: the screening of three French documentaries. More than seventy years later, the Cine Club Manresa remains true to its origins and now also has a presence on the Internet, with a domain that could not be anything else.
We spoke with the organisation to understand how a cultural association with such deep roots in its territory made the leap into the digital world, and why the .cat was the obvious choice.
How was the Cine Club Manresa founded and what are its main objectives?
The association was born as a section of the Marian Congregations of Manresa, and over the course of its history it has been linked to both the Spanish and Catalan Film Club Federations. Throughout its history it has brought cinema to many locations in Manresa and has collaborated with a large number of the city’s organisations.
The main objectives of the Cine Club Manresa are to encourage, promote and foster an interest in cinema in all its forms, with an emphasis on films in their original language, Catalan and European productions, socially and politically engaged cinema, and collaboration with like-minded associations. All of this in close commitment to the city that gives it its name.
How did the decision to create an independent online presence come about?
Before 2007, the organisation already had an online presence through the portal lasequia.org, a space that offered web hosting to Manresa-based organisations. But they knew that having their own website would give them more autonomy and make it easier to consult the programme and activities, especially among younger generations. When domain .cat registrations opened in 2006, they did not take long to make the move.
What led you to choose the .cat?
The answer is straightforward: «As a cultural organisation, we are very deeply rooted in our territory, and the .cat seemed the most fitting choice for us — far more so than a .com, which means ‘commercial’.»
«The .cat is the right domain for organisations rooted in the country.»
Digital sovereignty: controlling your own space
One of the values the organisation highlights is the independence that having their own website gives them: «It is important for us to have a website that we fully control and not to depend on free websites that include advertising that most likely does not represent us.»
The Cine Club Manresa maintains control of its digital space, and of the image it projects.
What plans do you have for the future of the website?
The organisation plans to continue publishing its programme through the website and to expand the news section by incorporating videos of the most notable activities. A step forward to make cineclubmanresa.cat an increasingly living space for its community.
Seventy years of cinema, one single domain
There are organisations that carry so much history that their digital identity should reflect it. The Cine Club Manresa understood this straight away: when the .cat became available, they were among the first to make the move. Because when you have spent decades rooted in a territory and a language, your digital presence must reflect that too.
The strength of .cat is the strength of its people — thank you, Cine Club Manresa, for being part of it!
And you — haven’t you created your digital project in Catalan yet?
