We went through the Sunrise period from February 13th to April 21st 2006. This special period, reserved to the entities that are directly related to the Catalan language and culture, consisted of 3 phases.
- Phase I was reserved to institutions directly related to Catalan language and culture promotion.
- Phase II was reserved to any kind of entity (companies, business, associations, etc) that could credit being in the Internet with Catalan web pages, blogs, mail-lists, etc.
- Phase III was reserved to the 68,000 people, associations and companies that gave explicit support to the .cat candidature.
Since April 23rd 2006 the .cat domain is open to whoever fulfills the registration requirements. .CAT is a generic domain like .com or .org, but it is of the “sponsored” or “restricted” type: like for .edu or .museum you must comply with certain requirements to get a .cat domain.
